Two scientists are stood before their creation. Dax. A cybernetic creature with a monkey-ish
form. It sits still, no sign of power.
Jeff (Scientist #1)
And so he said, let there be Dax...
He pushes a button on a remote control like device he holds.
Nothing happens.
Eric(Scientist #2)
Nothing?
He pushes a few more buttons.
Dax Operating System Voice
Diagnostic mode. All sub-systems performing optimally.
Jeff
Let me try again.
He pushes the power up button again.
This time, Sparks and electro-static discharge around Dax's frame.
Eric
There she goes.
Seconds later, Dax's eyes slowly open.
Jeff
Hey buddy.
Dax
......
Eric
(Smiles)Just a little shy I guess. You alright Dax?
Dax
Where.....am......I?
Jeff
(Looking slightly puzzled) That's a very good question Dax. I'm impressed.
Eric
Who coded that?
Jeff
Steinberg probably, he always was one for theratics.
Dax
Who.....are.....you?
Jeff
You're full of questions buddy. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Dax nods slightly rather verbally reply.
Eric
This is out of this world.
Jeff
How do you feel Dax?
Dax thinks for a moment.
DAX
Thirsty...
Jeff
(laughs) Didn't Luke oil him?
Eric
Hold on.
Eric reaches over to a self-applying lubrication kit. He plugs it into a port in Dax's side panel.
Dax
Thank....you.
Eric
His verbal patterns are a little slow. Neural networks stablizing you think?
Jeff
Yeah nothing to worry about. Dax, do you want to see outside?
Dax
We are...inside...
Jeff
Yes that's remarkable. Outside is over there, through the window. Come on follow me.
Dax slowly lowers himself from his mount. Sort of mechanically as his neural motors adapt to the real world for the first time.
Eric
Excellent Dax. Mind yourself.
Dax reaches the window. He places his three pronged 'hand' on the window surface, trying to touch the sky.
Dax
....Beautiful...
Jeff
(Laughs) Very good Dax. His articulation networks are forming rapidly.
Eric
It's astounding. He'll be smarter than us in no time (laughs)
